Our History

While we’ve moved our locations a few times and our stores and trucks may look shiny and new, we are not a new business. With over 50 years of experience, we’ve grown and innovated on all fronts to become the premier cleaning and tailoring business in New York City.

1968

The Beginning with Betty Brite

Joseph Aviles opens his first dry cleaning store, Betty Brite, in Colts Neck, NJ

1969

Victoria applies for a job

Victoria, a young Colombian woman, applies for a job at Betty Brite. At first, Joseph told her she was too short and couldn’t reach the bars where clothes hang. She jumped up, grab the bar, and said, “I can do anything anyone else can!”

Mr. & Mrs. Aviles

Victoria and Joseph quickly fell in love and got married.

Working Together

Newly married, Victoria and Joseph worked very closely to grow their business, always dreaming of one day moving into New York City.

10 Downing St. Cleaners

Victoria and Joseph sell Betty Brite and move into the city, opening 10 Downing St. Cleaners. in the West Village.

Bridge St. Cleaners

Victoria and Joseph see a great opportunity to buy Bridge St. Cleaners in Brooklyn, NY.

Like Father, Like Son

Victoria and Joseph’s son, Richard, following in his fathers footsteps started working at the cleaners at an early age.

A Family Business

10 Downing St. Cleaners & Bridge St. Cleaners was always a family affair. Everyone contributed of their time to make the business a success.

From Downing St. to King St.

After losing their lease at 10 Downing St., Victoria and Joseph open King Garment Care just two blocks away.

From Bridge St. to Livingston St.

The landlord sells the building at Bridge St. Clenaers existing location, and again Victoria moves two blocks away to Livingston St.

Another Bridge move next door.

As Bridge Cleaners continued to grow, Victoria and Richard double the space of Bridge Cleaners & Tailors on Livingston Street.

Richard gets married.

Richard marries Melissa. Melissa soon after joins the family business.

Joseph, now retired, still keeps a close eye on things.

Joseph stops by to give Victoria a lollipop and make sure the everyone is delivering the best experience to our customers.

Victoria, Richard, & Melissa own and operate the family business today. (Henry, of course, comes to work everyday too)

The family decides to unify our brands (King + Bridge) and continue providing our customers with finest garment care and expert tailoring in New York City.
