We hear it all the time: “I just put it in the washing machine on gentle.” Here’s what happens when you do that. The agitation clumps the down fill, creating cold spots that never fully recover. The detergent strips the DWR (durable water repellent) coating that keeps you dry. The heat from the dryer can melt or weaken synthetic components. And if the jacket doesn’t dry completely — and down takes a very long time to dry — you’re looking at mildew.
A professional process is different. We use specialized solvents that clean the outer shell without stripping the coating. We handle the down fill in a way that preserves loft and distribution. And we finish each jacket with care, restoring it to the condition it was in when you first pulled it out of the box.
